Week 1: Addressing Issues
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Greeting from Cambodia!

I know I'm quite far behind others, but I'm positive to catch up with everyone.

Anyway, this is to submit my first assignment - Addressing Issues in Week 1.

The name of my project is OpenMobile Tech. The idea behind this project is to use mobile technology to help empower people in their everyday life.

And particularly, in this e-course, I want to focus and apply the potential of mobile technology in agriculture sector. In Cambodia, farmers account around 80% of the labor force, who are mostly living under poverty in rural and remote areas with lack of information and communications. Thus, without sufficient information, knowledge and communications, the local farmers become disadvantaged and fail to make sound and right decisions in their everyday life.

Having seen that availability of mobile phones in Cambodia with its high penetration than the fixed line (in 2007, 2.5M mobile subscribers and 37,500 fixed lines), mobile technology can play an importance role in filling the communications gap. Moreover, more and more farmers are able to own a mobile phone as there are wide range of cheap mobile handsets available in the market.

By utilizing mobile technology, using mobile phones as our medium to reach these poor farmers, the aim of this project is to improve agricultural value chains, which is a key to sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

Through mobile phone, we will facilitate the sharing of knowledge and information to the farmers and this will deliver practical benefits including increased income, improved food security, and reduced vulnerability to disruptions for rural poor farmers.

In summary, this project will utilize technology to address some issues that Cambodian farmers are facing:
1. Work & Economics - with useful information, e.g. market price, weather forecast..., they can improve their work and increase their income.
2. Education - we can also provide them tips and hints about farming and other practical knowledge, so they can be educated and improved their life.
3. Environment - we also aim to address some environment issues relevant to agriculture, e.g. overuse of chemical, pesticide... how to avoid pollution that might causes by their farming activities...

That's it!
Thanks, everyone for reading. And to hear some comments and feedback, so I can improve more.

Cheers,

Scale of Justice

It was taken in a wet market in SHV. A simple approach in being just and fair. Love it :-)
