Week 1: Addressing Issues
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Greeting from Cambodia!

I know I'm quite far behind others, but I'm positive to catch up with everyone.

Anyway, this is to submit my first assignment - Addressing Issues in Week 1.

The name of my project is OpenMobile Tech. The idea behind this project is to use mobile technology to help empower people in their everyday life.

And particularly, in this e-course, I want to focus and apply the potential of mobile technology in agriculture sector. In Cambodia, farmers account around 80% of the labor force, who are mostly living under poverty in rural and remote areas with lack of information and communications. Thus, without sufficient information, knowledge and communications, the local farmers become disadvantaged and fail to make sound and right decisions in their everyday life.

Having seen that availability of mobile phones in Cambodia with its high penetration than the fixed line (in 2007, 2.5M mobile subscribers and 37,500 fixed lines), mobile technology can play an importance role in filling the communications gap. Moreover, more and more farmers are able to own a mobile phone as there are wide range of cheap mobile handsets available in the market.

By utilizing mobile technology, using mobile phones as our medium to reach these poor farmers, the aim of this project is to improve agricultural value chains, which is a key to sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

Through mobile phone, we will facilitate the sharing of knowledge and information to the farmers and this will deliver practical benefits including increased income, improved food security, and reduced vulnerability to disruptions for rural poor farmers.

In summary, this project will utilize technology to address some issues that Cambodian farmers are facing:
1. Work & Economics - with useful information, e.g. market price, weather forecast..., they can improve their work and increase their income.
2. Education - we can also provide them tips and hints about farming and other practical knowledge, so they can be educated and improved their life.
3. Environment - we also aim to address some environment issues relevant to agriculture, e.g. overuse of chemical, pesticide... how to avoid pollution that might causes by their farming activities...

That's it!
Thanks, everyone for reading. And to hear some comments and feedback, so I can improve more.

Cheers,

Learning more about Gorrila while enjoying game on your mobile
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Greeting to all!

This is my 3rd post and I would like to share you this free game which you can enjoy on your mobile phone, and plus at the same time learning more about Gorilla Conservation in Africa.

Project: Mobile games-for-good

Project: Silverbackers

In partnership with Fauna & Flora International and Masabi, kiwanja.net has re-packaged and re-released a 2003 mobile game - "Silverback" - originally developed for the wildlive! project on the Vodafone live! service. The idea of the game is to educate people about mountain gorillas and the threats they face in the wild, and the on-going conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. To get a copy of the game, which is being distributed for free, visit the Silverbackers website at http://www.silverbackers.org

Hope you enjoy the game! If so, please share to your friends and family! Nice weekends :-)

Introducing FrontlineSMS
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

I happened to visit a website, called www.kiwanja.net founded by Ken Banks. This kiwanja.net project's tagline is "where [mobile] technology meeting anthropology, conservation and development."

I am very interested in one of its project - FrontlineSMS, which is a very useful tool that allows us to communicate with large groups of people via SMS anywhere there is a mobile signal.

I wrote to kiwanja.net and express my interest in volunteering on Khmer language support/version of FrontlineSMS as I see there are already some other language versions available beside English.

I got a prompt reply from Mr. Ken, the founder. So, very soon we will be working together, and I can help spread the word of FrontlineSMS within my country (Cambodia) and the rest of the world to benefit socially from this useful tool, esp. for grassroots NGOs and civil society.

To learn more about this FrontlineSMS application, please visit http://www.frontlinesms.com.

All for now, will keep you posted if I've update.
Cheers,
